CARTERVILLE - All John A. Logan College students are invited to attend the Student Leadership Program: Communication on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. in the McCollum Room.  This free event is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities & Cultural Events at Logan.

Adrienne Barkley Giffin, director of student activities and cultural events at the college, organized the program.

“The first session in the leadership program is on communication,” Giffin said.  “Our college president, Dr. Mike Dreith, has a background in radio and is an excellent communicator.  I asked him to speak to the students at the first session and share the skills he uses when communicating as a leader.”

Dreith said he is looking forward to talking to the students.

“I’m going to share with the students some of the things I learned as I worked my way up the organizational chart at a community college,” Dreith said.  “I engaged in a form of followership before I got to the point where I could move to leadership.  In any position I’ve been in, I’ve always found someone who was really good at that position and I detailed the reasons why they were good at it.  Then I would try to add those things to my own arsenal.  Through the years, I learned things that I would do if I ever had higher office, and I certainly learned things that I would never do.”

Dreith believes it is important for students to see leaders in action.

“It’s wonderful for students to have access to chief operating officers,” Dreith said.  “It’s one thing to learn about principles of management and leadership in a book, and it’s another to hear true anecdotal stories about how those principles are put to work every day.  It can bring to life some of the things they’ve heard about and read about in classes concerning leadership and management.”

In addition to the session on communication, two more sessions will be offered this fall.  Stress, Resilience, & Leadership will be held on October 15 and the third session, Personal Strengths, Personality, & Intelligence will be held on November 19.

“This program is an opportunity for all students on our campus to develop leadership skills,” Giffin said.  “Students who attend all three sessions will receive a free pad folio and will have “Student Leadership Program” on their official John A. Logan transcript.”
