SPRINGFIELD – The John A. Logan College volleyball team split four matches over the weekend at a tournament hosted by Lincoln Land College in Springfield.

The Volunteers earned wins over Lincoln Trail (25-11, 25-9, 25-15) and Allen County (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) after losing to East Central (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) and Harper (24-26, 25-23, 25-27, 25-13, 15-17).

Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Vaughn led the team in kills with 31. Freshman outside hitter Carly Callahan followed with 27. Sophomore middle hitter Morgan Corn added 17 kills.

Sophomore setter Megan Martin was tops in assists with 84. Defensively, sophomore Erin Dodd led the way in digs with 70. Vaughn contributed 49 and Callahan 30.

Corn had the most blocks with 13. Both Martin and Vaughn accounted for three service aces.

“It was definitely an up-and-down weekend,” said Vols head coach Bill Burnside. “I think we had a little bit of a confidence issue in the first couple matches. We had a little trouble recovering mentally from a tough loss to Lake Land last Wednesday night. In critical moments of the first two matches, we got a little tight and gave away important points. We got back on track and in rhythm versus Lincoln Trail and Allen County to finish the tournament on a positive note.”

Burnside said Vaughn and Callahan had a solid tournament.

“Both are playing a lot of minutes and contributing in a lot of areas,” he said. “Morgan struggled with an injury early in the tournament, but came back strong in the Allen County match. Her play at the net in that match set the tone for our offense. Kierra Nolan (freshman middle hitter) also struggled a little early in the tournament, but led the offensive charge against Allen County with eight kills.”

The Vols (15-7) return to Great Rivers Athletic Conference play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rend Lake.
