CARTERVILLE – Setter Megan Martin served the first nine points of the match Wednesday as the John A. Logan College volleyball team swept three sets from Southwestern Illinois, 25-12, 25-20, 25-20, on Sophomore Night at the college.

Vols head coach Bill Burnside was impressed.

“We started off very strong in jumping out to a big lead,” he said. “Our pace then slowed some over the next two sets to kind of match our opponent, but overall, I’d say we played pretty well. In fact, we have been playing better and better as a team as the season has worn on.”

With the win, Logan moves to 21-8 and wraps up Great Rivers Athletic Conference play at 8-2. Both league losses came at the hands of champion, Lake Land.

Against the Blue Storm of SWIC Wednesday, sophomore outside hitter Audrey Vaughn of Murphysboro paced the offense with 11 kills. She was also solid defensively, registering 10 digs.

Sophomore hitters Catherine Price and Morgan Corn (Benton) followed with six kills each. Price added six service aces and Corn had two blocks.

Martin finished with a team-high 21 assists and added three service aces. She is ranked No. 40 in the nation in aces at 0.5 per game. Sophomore rightside hitter Lauren Person finished the night with one kill and three blocks.

Sophomore defensive specialist Erin Dodd (Marion) led the way in digs with 17. She ranks 42nd nationally with 4.9 per game.

“We took care of business on the home court tonight and did an especially good job with our blocks,” Dodd said. “I was proud that we came away with the win on Sophomore Night.

“As for the District Tournament next week at Mattoon, we have to play with a lot of confidence, even though we are going up against some of the top teams in the nation,” Dodd said. “I love being the underdog, and hey, you never know. If we play hard with a lot of heart, we might pull out some big wins.”
