CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan College men’s basketball player A.J. Riley has announced his commitment to play ball next school year at Eastern Illinois University at Charleston.

Through five games this season, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound power guard from Peoria is averaging 11 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game to help the Volunteers bolt to a 4-1 record.

“I don’t think A.J. could have have put himself in a better position than with Eastern Illinois and their coaching staff,” said Vols head coach Kyle Smithpeters. “Personally, I think it’s a great (recruiting) steal. A.J. can do a lot of things. He can handle the ball, which allows him to run the point or play the off guard. He passes well. His jump shot has improved tremendously and he has good size for a guard. He basically creates problems for the defense. I’m excited about his future there.”

Riley said he chose EIU because the team’s coaches had been recruiting him for two years.

“They have been talking to me since last year and seemed to be more interested in me than other schools,” he said. “When I finally took my campus visit there a few weeks ago, I liked what I saw. It’s my hope that I can help them win games. And it doesn’t matter to me what position I play. Wherever I can help the most is what I want to do.”
