CARTERVILLE - The Student Success Center at John A. Logan College welcomed students and staff to learn more about the services it offers to help students succeed at an open house it hosted recently. The center is home to the TRiO Program, a federally-funded grant aimed at helping at-risk college students, Disability Support Services, and a campus tutoring program.
“We have these open houses every semester, and they are a great way to highlight our programs and services and let students know where we are and how we can help them,” said Carolyn Gallegly, director of the Student Success Center. “Our mission is student success. Everything we do is designed to help students overcome any obstacles and challenges they may face so they will stay in school and accomplish their academic goals.”
Cheryl Barrall, an English instructor at JALC, brought many of her students to the open house.
“I think these open houses are wonderful events, and I bring my classes to them each semester,” Barrall said. “Students often need a little extra assistance outside the classroom, and the open house gives them valuable information about how they can get involved and get the support they need. I also feel like students are more likely to go to the center and use the services such as tutoring if they have actually been there before and met some of the staff members.”
Gallegly said students who couldn’t make it to the open house can still find out about the resourses available at the center.
“I encourage students to come by the office anytime to get information about our services,” Gallegly said. “They can also visit our Web site, which is a good source of information. Students can click on the different pages and links on the Web site that explain how our programs work and how they can benefit from them.”
In addition to its three main programs, the Student Success Center conducts educational workshops throughout the year and also provides crisis counseling to students. The center is located in C219 and office hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
