CARTERVILLE - Applications are now being accepted for the 28th annual Miss and Mrs. Volunteer Scholarship Pageants and the second annual Mr. Volunteer Pageant.  They will take place at John A. Logan College on Sunday, Feb. 15.  The application deadline is Monday, Feb. 9.

Karen Sala, long-time music professor at JALC, is organizing the pageants.

“I had wanted to have a pageant for men for a long time, and last year, we finally did,” Sala said.  “It was really great and a lot of fun.  The guys had a good time and the audience enjoyed it, too.  Having the three pageants gives just about any full or part-time student at Logan the opportunity to participate and earn scholarship money.”

The winners of the three pageants will receive a $500 scholarship to the college or university of their choice, as well as a trophy, crown, and other gifts.

Sala said the Miss Volunteer Pageant is a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant and contestants must be single and be between the ages of 17 and 24.  They will be judged in interview, evening gown, swimsuit, and talent competitions.   The winner will compete in the Miss Illinois Pageant in June.

The Mrs. Volunteer contestants can be any age and must be currently or formerly married.  They will participate in interview, evening gown, and talent competitions.

The contestants for Mr. Volunteer can be of any age or marital status.  They will be judged on the basis of evening wear, interview, and talent.

In addition to earning scholarship money, Sala said the winners serve as representatives of the college at various functions throughout the year.

The pageants will be held at 5:30 p.m. in JALC’s O' Neil Auditorium.  Admission is $7 for the general public and $3 for children 10 and under.

Anyone interested in participating in one of the pageants should contact Sala at 618-942-6264 and fill out an application.
