CENTRALIA - Sophomore guard Martavian Payne poured in 25 points Monday to lead the John A. Logan College men's basketball team to a 65-56 Great Rivers Athletic Conference win over host Kaskaskia.

The Volunteers improve to 9-2 in the league with the victory and 18-4 overall. The Blue Devils slip to 6-5 in the GRAC and 15-7 overall.

Payne was solid all 40 minutes, scoring 13 in the first half and an even dozen in the second half. He was 9-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-7 from long range and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Surprisingly, no other Logan player reached double figures. Connor Wheeler, Tamas Bruce and Russell Woods all tallied eight. Devontavius Payne and Jordan Martin notched five apiece. Bobby Mannie tacked on four and Jeremiah Jackson added two.

Kaskaskia was led by Charles Cooper's 19 points.

"Our offense didn't quite carry us tonight, but I thought we defended well down the stretch," said Vols head coach Kyle Smithpeters. "Anytime you hold a team like Kaskaskia under 60 points on their home floor, you're doing something right."

Logan hosts Olney at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It is "Carterville Night" at the college. All residents of the Unit 5 school district get free admission to the game. All students get one free popcorn and soda compliments of The Bank of Herrin.

The JALC Foundation will also host its annual Italian dinner fundraiser downstairs in the cafeteria from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults or $5 for students.
