CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College softball team took a couple on the chin Saturday, falling at home to Shawnee, 9-7 in nine innings, and 10-7.

Freshman Brittney Pritchett of Goreville was the pitcher of record for the Vols in the opener. She allowed all nine runs on 15 hits, struck out one and walked none.

Logan tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Saints tallied one run in the eighth and the Vols matched. Shawnee scored three more times in the ninth and Logan could only come up with one in the bottom of the ninth, leaving the tying runs on base as the game ended.

Sophomore outfielder Kelsey Robinson of Du Quoin slugged her second homer in as many games and finished with three hits to pace the Vols’ offense. Kelsey Rogers was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, while Kiley Pelker finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Maddie Craig also rapped out two hits. Amanda Evinger, Kaylyn Winders and Katrina Whitley each notched one hit.

In Game 2, the Vols led 4-2 before Shawnee exploded for eight runs off losing pitcher Corrine Wilson. The Elverado High School product pitched all seven innings, surrendered nine earned runs on 17 hits, struck out one and walked four.

Offensively, Whitley led the charge with three hits, including a double and RBI. Robinson stroked yet another roundtripper and had a second hit with two RBIs. Jen Bailey homered, singled, drove in two and scored two. Anna Mansfield was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Pelker and Rogers had one hit apiece.

Rogers also had what some thought was a three-run homer called foul.

“We didn’t take advantage of all our scoring opportunities,” said JALC head coach Bruce Jilek. “Still, the seven runs we scored in each game should have been enough to win. It just wasn’t today. Offensively, I thought that Robinson, Bailey, Whitley and Pelker all had solid days.”

Logan plays a doubleheader at Rend Lake College today beginning at 2 p.m.
