ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals Saturday recalled middle infielder Dean Anna from its Class AAA Memphis affiliate after placing outfielder Randal Grichuk on the disabled list.
Anna is a former member of the John A. Logan College Volunteers (Class of '07). He spent six years in the San Diego Padres organization before getting traded to the New York Yankees prior to the start of the 2014 season.
Anna played sparingly for the Yankees last spring and was eventually traded to Pittsburgh and then ultimately released.
This past winter, the Cardinals signed Anna and placed him on their 40-man Major League roster. He appeared in Spring Training with the Redbirds and was optioned to Memphis last month before his recall Saturday.
Anna is one of five former Vols to compete at the Major League level. Others include: Jamey Carroll, Tom Kramer, Jason Boyd and John Ambrose.
