INA - The John A. Logan College women's golf team is in second place after opening-round action of the Region 24 tournament hosted by Rend Lake College Sunday.

The Volunteers shot a combined score of 357, or 39 strokes behind the Warriors' total of 318.

Top individual scorer for Logan was freshman Adrian Brown of Carterville (83). Freshman Reagan Keepes of Mount Carmel followed with a 90. Sophomore Chelsea Capel of Marion had the Vols' third-best score at 91. Sophomore Kirsten Faulkner of Metropolis was fourth at 93 and freshman Payton Choate of Campbell Hill was fifth at 95.

The first-place team automatically qualifies for the national tournament, along with the next five-best scores. If the Vols have four individuals with the next-best scores, they would also qualify as a team.

"I thought we started off pretty well today, but faltered somewhat on the back nine," said Logan head coach Bill Glenn. "Give credit to Rend Lake's kids. They played very well. In fact, they had two of their players break 80. I am hopeful that we can improve our team score Monday and make things more competitive."

The second and final round of the regional tees off at 10 today at the Rend Lake course.
