CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan College will host the 21st Annual DEAFest this Friday in the conference center. The event will feature entertainment and information for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, while celebrating and promoting awareness of Deaf culture.
The event, coordinated by the Gallaudet Regional Center on Logan’s campus and JALC’s Interpreter Preparation Program, will have a morning session for children beginning at 9. The movie “No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie” starring John Maucere and Oscar winner Marlee Matlin will be shown. The children will also be treated to a surprise special guest.
The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 with activities geared toward adults. John Maucere will do a comedic performance, and Deaf advocate Dana Craig and attorney Andres Gallegos will lead a discussion on the communication needs of deaf patients in hospitals, including video remote interpreting.
In addition to the activities, vendors with products and services beneficial to the Deaf and hard of hearing will be on hand, and there will also be a raffle drawing.
Valarie Shaw, director of the Interpreter Preparation Program at JALC, assisted in organizing the event.
“DEAFest is an event that allows people who are deaf and hard of hearing to come together and share in their culture and talk about issues that are unique to their needs and the challenges they face,” Shaw said. “It also gives our interpreter preparation students an opportunity to interact with members of the Deaf community and practice their interpreting skills.”
Shaw said she is expecting a good turnout.
“People come from all over to attend DEAFest,” Shaw said. “There aren’t a lot of events that cater specifically to the Deaf community, so they come out en masse for this event. We also welcome everyone in the hearing community to come as well. It’s a great way for them to meet new people and learn more about Deaf culture in a fun environment.”
DEAFest is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Shaw at 618-985-2828 or 618-457-7676, Ext. 8456 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
