CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College volleyball team continued to show improvement Saturday, winning matches against Lindenwood-Belleville and McKendree University’s junior varsity squads, placing first at its own invitational tournament.

Logan first dispatched of the Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville, 25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19.

In the second match, the Vols swept the Bearcats of McKendree in three sets: 25-17, 25-6, 25-18.

Freshman Annie Wehrheim of Woodlawn paced the Vols’ offense with 22 kills. She added 12 digs defensively and five blocks. Freshman setter Caroline Rogers was tops in assists with 31 and added eight digs.

Sophomore rightside hitter Chynna Byars was second in kills with 15 and contributed seven blocks.

Sophomore setter Christy Hayden of Benton was the leader in service aces with seven and added 26 assists.

Freshman middle hitter Cheyenne Pitchford of Sesser was tops in blocks with 12 and sophomore middle hitter Kierra Nolan of Murphysboro chipped in nine kills and seven blocks.

JALC head coach Bill Burnside said he was impressed with his team’s performance.
“I’m happy with the way the girls are coming along,” he said. “We can start to see how the pieces are fitting together. We’re starting to play better as a unit rather than all individual play. We’re doing a better job in all facets of the game and everyone is contributing.”

The Vols have now won four straight matches and stand 6-3 overall. Logan plays at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rend Lake College.
