MATTOON - The John A. Logan College volleyball team dropped its first Great Rivers Athletic Conference match Wednesday as the Lake Land College Lakers prevailed in four sets: 25-18, 17-25, 25-22, 25-15.

The Volunteers slide to 6-1 in the league and 14-7 overall. The host Lakers improve to 4-3 in the league and 15-7 overall.

"We really had a bad night, no two ways around it," said Vols head coach Bill Burnside. "We're just not really in tune with what's going on around us. We have to regroup and play better if we want to have a chance to win the conference. The good news is that we do control our own destiny."

The Vols were led offensively by freshman outside hitter Annie Wehrheim of Woodlawn who finished with 12 kills. Sophomore Kierra Nolan of Murphysboro and freshman Cheyenne Pitchford of Sesser contributed five each.

Nolan led in blocks with seven while Pitchford had six.

Freshman setter Caroline Rogers led in assists with 16 and in digs with 14.
Logan competes in the Lincoln Land Invitational this weekend in Springfield before returning to league play at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday at home against Rend Lake. It will be "Sophomore Night" at the college.
