CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan College will host the 29th annual Miss and Mrs. Volunteer Scholarship Pageants and the 3rd annual Mr. Volunteer Pageant on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. in O’Neil Auditorium.  The event is open to the public and tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.

Karen Sala, long-time music professor at JALC, is coordinating the pageants.

“This is a fun event,” Sala said.  “We have 10 participants in the three pageants this year.  It’s not a large field, but it’s large enough and the contestants are high-quality.”

The winners of the three pageants will each receive a $500 scholarship to the college or university of their choice as well as a crown, a sash, and other gifts.  The first runner-ups will win $150 scholarships.

Sala said the Miss Volunteer Pageant is a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant and in addition to being full- or part-time Logan students, contestants must be single and be between ages of 17 and 24.  They will be judged in interview, evening gown, swimsuit, and talent competitions.  The winner will compete in the Miss Illinois America Pageant in June.

The Mrs. Volunteer and Mr. Volunteer contestants also have to be full- or part-time students at JALC. The Mrs. contestants can be any age and can be currently or formerly married, and the Mr. contestants can be of any age or marital status.  Both groups will participate in interview, evening wear, and talent competitions.

In addition to earning scholarship money and prizes, Sala said the winners will represent the college at various functions throughout the year.

“The judges are looking for people who will be good representatives and spokespeople for the college,” Sala said.

"We are a diverse learning and teaching community committed to improving individual life and society through high-quality, accessible educational programs and engaged learning opportunities."
