CARTERVILLE – Madison Rapien and Kelsey Rogers slugged home runs and the John A. Logan College softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Three Rivers, Mo. Friday, 7-1 and 7-1. The second game was shortened to four innings due to darkness.

In the opener, freshman Nicole Short improved to 2-0 on the spring by allowing only one run on one hit in five innings of work. She struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Jennifer Bailey hurled the final two frames, surrendering only one hit, while striking out three and walking none.

Offensively, Jordyn Smith, Rapien and Rogers had two hits each with Rapien delivering a round-tripper over the left field fence. Bailey had a double and two runs batted in. Katie Sandusky, Kiarha Wilce, and Katrina Whitley added one hit apiece.

In the nightcap, freshman Brooke Arnold of Crab Orchard picked up the win. She went three innings and allowed one run on three hits. She also fanned three and walked one. Freshman Grace Vaughn (Pope County) tossed a scoreless fourth.

At the dish, Sandusky roped three hits to lead the charge. Rogers again belted two hits, including a homer. Wilce and Smith had two hits, as well. Briah Winchester, Kiley Pelker and Megan Hampton all contributed one hit.

Vols head coach Angie Jilek was pleased.

“Any win is good, but we played much better today than when we faced them (Three Rivers) in the fall,” she said. “Up and down our lineup, we swung the bat well today and our pitchers gave up only two runs combined for the two games. I would call that a good day.”

Now 3-1 on the spring, Logan will play host to Frontier College of Fairfield on Sunday in a noon doubleheader.
