CENTRALIA – The John A. Logan College softball team got its conference season started on the right foot with a road sweep of Kaskaskia Thursday, 9-2 and 8-5.
In the opener, the Vols pounded out nine runs on eight hits. Logan scored two runs in the first inning compliments of a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore outfielder, Kelsey Rogers. She would later add an RBI triple.
The Vols added four runs in the third and three more in the seventh highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of freshman Jordyn Smith, who also rapped a double.
Freshman Logan Bowlby had an RBI single. Freshman Lauren Talton accounted for two singles. Jennifer Bailey contributed a double.
Winning pitcher was Bailey.
In Game 2, the Vols plated eight runs on 14 hits. Logan scored three runs in the second inning; one in the third; three in the fifth; and one in the sixth. The Blue Angels crossed the plate once in the first; three times in the third; and once more in the sixth.
Freshman outfielder Kiarha Wilce and Bailey each pounded out three hits to pace the attack. Wilce had a double and two-run single. Bailey scored two runs.
Freshman Katie Sandusky belted a triple, homer, and scored two runs. Freshman Megan Hampton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman Brooke Arnold had a hit and scored a run. Sophomore Kiley Pelker had a two-run triple and drove in three. Sophomore Katrina Whitley added a single, walk, sacrifice and was hit by a pitch.
The Blue Angels notched 11 hits in the loss.
Winning pitcher was freshman Nicole Short.
“We had a good day overall,” said JALC head coach Angie Jilek. “It's always a dogfight come conference time, and today was no exception. The wind was brutal, but ironically, we hit two homers into the teeth of the wind with Rogers hitting one and Smith hitting one. Sandusky also hit a towering homer down the rightfield line.”
Jilek said the pitching was solid, but not as sharp as it has been.
“Kaskaskia had a ton of speed, which put pressure on us defensively,” she said. “We are happy to have grabbed two wins.”
Logan travels to Southwestern Illinois to play two on Monday.
