ULLIN - Freshman pitcher Patrick McBride tossed eight solid innings Tuesday to lead the John A. Logan College baseball team to a 7-2 win over host Shawnee.

The Volunteers improve to 9-1 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and to 22-6 overall.

McBride allowed only two runs on three hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

"Patrick was outstanding today," said JALC head coach Jerry Halstead. "He was in total control out there. He threw strikes and stayed ahead in the count. He didn't make many mistakes."

Another freshman, Taylor Grider, hurled a scoreless ninth.

Logan was paced offensively by designated hitter/catcher Colin Butkiewicz's four hits in five at bats.

Freshman catcher Marshall Gilbert stroked three hits in five at bats with two runs batted in.

Sophomore Jeff Hahs went 2-5 with a solo homer and three RBIs. Logan Kaletha banged out two hits, scored two runs, and drove in a run. Tyler Horchem had a double.

The Vols scored a single run in the first on an RBI single from Gilbert. They scored a second run in the fifth, again on an RBI single from Gilbert.

Kaletha drove in a run in the sixth with a sac fly. Two runs were added in the seventh when Hahs drove in a pair with a single.

Two final runs crossed the plate in the ninth as Hahs belted a solo homer and Lucas Larsen contributed a sac fly.

"It seemed like we were always one hit away from breaking things open," Halstead said. "We were putting the barrel of the bat on the ball quite often, but we left a lot of men on base."

Logan is scheduled to host Wabash Valley for a single game at 3 p.m. Thursday and will then travel to Mount Carmel for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
