DECATUR - Sophomore Austin Grote placed third overall and three of his teammates joined him in the Top 10 as the John A. Logan College men's golf team brought home the first-place prize at the two-day Millikin University invitational Saturday.

The Volunteers fired rounds of 294 (Friday) and 291 (Saturday) to win the meet with a combined score of 585. It is their best performance of the spring.

"It's always good to win a tournament and this one is even more special because it gives us some momentum I would think going into the District Meet next weekend in Alabama," said Vols head coach Tom Ferris.

Grote carded rounds of 74 and 70 to finish at 144. Freshman Hunter York was only two strokes back of him at 146  (72, 74). Freshman Nick Woolard followed with a 147 (73, 74).

Sophomore Kody Rendleman of Murphysboro was next with a 148 (75, 73) and freshman Landon Vaughan of Hamilton County checked in with a 157 (75, 82).

Sophomore Neal Northcott, playing as an individual, recorded scores of 78 and 73 for a 151.

"These are the kinds of scores I was hoping to see from this group, and I still think we are capable of doing even better," Ferris said.

The District tournament in Cullum, Ala. gets under way Sunday, April 24th and concludes on Tuesday the 26th. The top five schools will advance to the national tournament in Texas.
