CARTERVILLE – Sophomore shortstop Tyler Robertson banged out three hits and drove in three runs Friday to lead the John A. Logan College baseball team to a 4-2 Great Rivers Athletic Conference home win over Olney.

With the victory, the Volunteers improve to 39-9 on the spring overall and 22-3 in the league.

Robertson homered to left in the third inning to give Logan a 1-0 lead. After Tyler Horchem extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo shot in the fourth, Robertson was back at it in the fifth with an RBI double to right to make the score 3-0.

The Blue Knights closed to within 3-2 on an error by Robertson in the sixth that led to two unearned runs off starter and winning pitcher, Matthias Dietz.

Robertson then atoned for that miscue with a two-out RBI single in the seventh.

“It felt good to get some hits and help the team win today, especially when it’s the first game of the conference series,” Robertson said.

Earlier in the day, the sophomore committed to play at Western Kentucky University this fall.

“I always wanted to go there. It’s nice to get an offer from them and continue my baseball career,” he said.

Dietz scattered six hits with none coming in the final three innings. He struck out nine and walked none. The sophomore righthander improves his personal record to 11-1. Going into the game, he ranked second in the nation in wins.

“I thought it was really a bad day for me,” Dietz said. “Even when I started warming up in the bullpen before the game, something seemed off. It was mostly about command I would say. I was throwing it and they were missing it, thankfully, but it just didn’t feel as good as it has in past games.”

The Vols are scheduled to play at Olney on Monday.
