CARTERVILLE–The John A. Logan College men’s golf team placed three golfers in the top five in route to a first-place finish at the seven-team Region 24 Preview Tournament played last week at Franklin County Country Club in West Frankfort. The Volunteers shot a 36-hole total of 590 (295-295).

Brendan Lewis, a freshman from Marion, led the way for Logan, taking third place with a 145 (72-73), followed by D.J. Pigg with a 146 (72-74) and Nick Woolard with a 148 (75-73) who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In addition to the A team that won the tournament, JALC Coach Tom Ferris also competed a B team in the event to give his younger players some experience. The B team was not eligible to win or place as a team, but if it had been, it would have finished second, with a 603 (310-293).

For Ferris the win was a good start, but he said there is always room to improve.

“It’s always great to win, and I think we learned a lot about what we need to work on to improve,” Ferris said. “We had solid play from most of the team, but we do need to play better if we are to contend for a district and national title.”

Vincennes University placed second followed by Rend Lake, Lincoln Trail, Mineral Area, Kaskaskia, and Lewis & Clark.

The Vols will return to action September 9-11 at the Vincennes University Invitational.
