The 2016-17 basketball season begins on Tuesday (Nov. 1) for both the John A. Logan men and women. The men open at home with a 7 p.m. game against the Kentucky Wesleyan JVs while the women open on the road at Mineral Area in a 5 p.m. contest.

“I feel good about our team as we head into the season,” said men’s coach Kyle Smithpeters. “The Jamboree that we hosted told us a lot about our team. I thought we got better as the day went along,” he said. “I think we got a dose of reality in our first game of the day against a very talented Southwest Tennessee team. They jumped to a 15-point first half lead and led by 15 in the second half before we came back to earn a tie.”

It is interesting that in the NJCAA poll Southwest Tennessee is ranked 7th and Logan is ranked 8th.

“We have good talent and experience, but we haven’t played together as a team that long. Smithpeters said. “We have the pieces, we just need to find the right combinations and develop a winning chemistry.”

The Lady Vols have a tough opener on the road at Mineral Area College. The Cardinals were 23-8 last season and ranked 21st nationally.

John A. Logan went 3-0 in a Jamboree at SWIC and coach Amanda Shelby is anxious to see how her veteran team shapes up against Mineral Area. “We have a tough early schedule with another big road test coming on Nov. 8 at Three Rivers.”

The Lady Vols open their home season on Friday, 5 p.m., against the Lindenwood-Belleville JV squad.
