JALC Coach Smithpeters and Men’s and Women’s Hoopers Earn Postseason Honors

CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan College’s men’s and women’s basketball players and men’s coach Kyle Smithpeters have garnered awards from the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and NJCAA Region 24.
Smithpeters was named GRAC “Coach of the Year” for the third time in his five years as the coach of the Vols. He guided Logan to the GRAC title and Region 24 regular season title with an overall record of 24-7.
“It is always good to be recognized by your peers, but it is the players who do the job on the floor,” Smithpeters said. “We had a good season with great effort by our entire roster.”
Jalen Perry of Logan was named the GRAC and Region 24 “Player of the Year,” giving a Logan player the award for three straight years. Perry, a sophomore from Louisville, Ken., averaged 20 points per game.
Martavian Payne won the award in 2015, while Devontavius Payne of Carbondale who is now playing in the NCAA tournament for East Tennessee State won the award last year.
Tiaunna Watkins and Destiny Cozart were named All-GRAC and All-Region 24 after leading the Lady Vols to a record of 16-13 and a berth in the District 16 tournament semifinals. Watkins, a sophomore from Hot Springs, Ark., averaged 18 points per game while Cozart, a freshman from Lexington, Ken., averaged 14 points per game.
