CARTERVILLE — He remained focused.

After all, that’s what his coach had taught him.

Brian Whitson shot a triple bogey on the second hole of the day during district competition in Florida last week.

“A little panic set in with that triple bogey,” Whitson said. But he remembered the words of Coach Tom Ferris: “When you get down like this, it’s time to remember you’ve practiced all year and you’ve just got to grind the whole thing out.”

Whitson stayed focused. He finished in the top 10 and was named All-District. The John A. Logan College golf team finished third and qualified for the national tournament in Texas.

The national tournament is in Lubbock May 22-25. A strong personal finish in Texas could mean All-American status for Whitson.

“The All-District award is a great honor for me, but hopefully this is about going down there (to Texas) and being successful as a team,” Whitson said. “It’s always more fun when you win as a team.”

Ferris, a NJCAA Hall of Fame golf coach, has coached 15 players to All-American status. “It’s a big honor and so is being named All-District,” Ferris said. “Brian (Whitson) is a great player, good person, good student, positive attitude, and he represents John A. Logan College very well.”

Whitson is undecided on where he will go after graduation from Logan. He said, however, that someday he would like to be a basketball coach.

Basketball not golf?

“I’d enjoy coaching basketball,” Whitson said.

Life is a lot like golf, expect the unexpected.
