A bipartisan group of legislators from southern Illinois has joined together to support John A. Logan College’s annual Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days. On Friday, State Senator Dale Fowler and State Representative Dave Severin represented the caucus to present a $1,000 check to John A. Logan College President Dr. Ron House and Hunting and Fishing Days coordinator Dr. Barry Hancock. This is the first time that the group has been involved in Hunting and Fishing Days, but if it is up to Severin the caucus will be involved with Hunting and Fishing Days for a long time.

“It was important to me to get the caucus involved because we haven’t been in the past, and truthfully being involved in this should be a no brainer for all that it does for young people and tourism in southern Illinois,” said Severin. “So we came together on this, both Republicans and Democrats because we all support this 100 percent, and I can tell you as long as I am a member of the caucus I will push to support this event.”

For Fowler the work that the caucus and the College do to promote outdoor activities for youth and individuals with disabilities is what makes him the most proud to be a member of the caucus.

“I am proud to be a member of this caucus because it is an amazing organization that does a lot to promote hunting and fishing,” said Fowler. “As members we are given the opportunity to give a grant and I am particularly proud that we chose this event because it is going to help provide some disabled youth the opportunity to go fishing, and I think that is one of the most important things we can do with these proceeds.”

President House thanked the group for their support of the event that will bring an estimated 40,000 people to the Carterville campus the weekend of September 22 and 23.

“We truly appreciate the support of the caucus for this event that is not only important to the College, but to local tourism as well,” said House. “The fact that this has received such strong bipartisan support shows just how valuable this event is, and with support like this we know that we can continue to make it premier event year in and year out.”

Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days is now in its 31st year and will kick off at 9 AM on Saturday, September 23. This year’s event is highlighted by an appearance on Saturday by former Animal Planet TV Star, The Turtle Man, from Noon to 3 PM on the outdoor stage.
