CARTERVILLE - Anjelica Miranda-Wulff of Marion was awarded the 2014-15 Ann L. Knewitz “Believe and Achieve” Scholarship by the John A. Logan College Scholarship Committee.  Established in 2002, the scholarship is awarded annually to a returning JALC female student that is a resident of the college’s district and majoring in education or an allied health field.

Originally from Chicago, Miranda-Wulff joined the U.S. Army after graduating from high school.  She served on active duty and in the reserve for 11 years, including a one-year deployment in Iraq.  In 2011, she started taking classes at Logan for the dental assisting program and completed that program in May of 2013.  She is currently enrolled in the dental hygiene program.

“I was surprised when I found out I got the scholarship,” Miranda-Wulff said.  “I knew it would go to someone who was studying education or any of the allied health programs, including nursing, so I figured there were a lot of other applicants.  I didn’t expect to be selected, but I’m happy I was.  I really appreciate the financial support.”

In addition to the $400 monetary award the scholarship provides, Miranda-Wulff received a plaque and a crystal apple engraved with her name, the scholarship name, and the date.  The scholarship is funded by a donation from Women for Health and Wellness, Inc.  Knewitz is co-founder of that organization’s Women’s Health Conference.

Della Fulk, associate professor and coordinator for dental hygiene at JALC, nominated Miranda-Wulff for the scholarship.

“Anjelica is one of my students and she’s a very hard worker,” Fulk said.  “She is always working to improve her skills and doesn’t settle for just getting by.  I’m glad her efforts were recognized with this scholarship.  I’m sure it will be helpful to her.”
