CARTERVILLE – John A. Logan College English instructor Kenneth “Fog” Gilbert recently reviewed a book of poetry written by Gwendolyn Jensen and published by Birchbrook Press.

A published author himself, Gilbert was asked by the book’s editor, Tom Tolnay, to look over Jensen’s work. His take appears on the book cover.

“Tom asked me if I could review the book and write a few words, and I was glad to do so,” Gilbert said. “The college also gets some recognition as my biography is included.”

Gilbert said written reviews often entice people to read the book.

“I have reviewed several poetry books by BZ Niditch, musician Tom MaClear, Lance Lee, Richard B. Hoffman and others,” Gilbert said. My reviews have appeared in Hudson View, Chiron Review, Torrid Literature and other magazines. I didn’t feel that comfortable doing that at first, but developed more of a comfort zone the more I did them. I read through the book several times, then just let it settle…get an idea for a thematic review…and then when I actually write the review, it is much like my poems. The review just pours out, most often in about 15 minutes or so.”
