CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College men’s basketball team added its first recruit of the off season with Wednesday’s announced signing of 6-foot-1 point guard Armon Benford of Chicago Simeon High School.

Benford’s role with the Wolverines was that of a distributor and not a scorer.

“Armon has done a great job the last couple of years running their offense,” said Vols head coach Kyle Smithpeters. “Anytime you can get a solid point guard from a very solid basketball program like Chicago Simeon, you’re happy. We are very fortunate to have such a good working relationship with the coaches there.”

Smithpeters said he was convinced Benford was worth the offer once he saw him mesh well with the Logan players on the floor.

“Our guys really liked him and responded to him out there. That’s what I was hoping to see. I have no doubt that he can come in here and contribute right away. He can create on offense and even score if needed.”

Benford said he felt like he “fit in” when visiting campus Wednesday and was content to sign on the spot.

“I really liked the atmosphere at Logan – the guys, the coaches. I felt real comfortable around everybody.”

Benford said he looks forward to the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.

“It’s something I’ve been dreaming about for some time now,” he said. “I just want to improve my basketball skills these next two years at Logan so that I can move on to a Division I or 2 four-year school.”

Benford was instrumental in leading Simeon to a 30-win season and Supersectional appearance this past season.
