CARTERVILLE – Less than a week after adding a 6-foot-7 Georgia recruit, John A. Logan College men’s basketball coach Kyle Smithpeters was busy signing another standout player from the Peach State, adding to his team’s robust size.

Lamarcus White, a 6-foot-10, 215-pound forward/center provides increased depth for a larger-than-average Vols squad. In fact, no fewer than six players on the present roster stand 6-foot-6 or taller.

“We already had a pretty solid team before the signing, but Lamarcus brings added depth,” said JALC head coach Kyle Smithpeters. “He plays extremely hard. He’s long and athletic. He can do a good job of altering the other team’s shots. He’s also very good in transition. It’s always nice to have another talented player to improve the competition in practice.”

Smithpeters said the plan this off season was to get more versatile.

“We wanted to have more guys who could step out (onto the perimeter) and handle the ball or shoot. We definitely wanted guys who could get up and down the floor. What that does is complement our guards when you have several big guys who can run. It’s going to make it very difficult for other teams to guard us.”

White transfers to Logan from the College of Southern Idaho, where he sat out all of last season due to knee surgery. The Columbus, Ga. native graduated from Kingdom Prep High School in 2014, helping to lead his team to three Georgia state championships. He earned team MVP honors two of those seasons.

White has four years of college eligibility remaining, including two years at Logan if he so chooses.

“I’m excited and ready to go,” he said. “I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates.”

White said he has much to prove to himself and others that he is the same kind of player he was before his knee injury.

According to Smithpeters, there is still a spot or two open on the roster for last-minute recruits.

“We’ve gotten some of our best players in past years in mid-to-late August,” he said. “You never know when that game-changer may come through your door.”
