The John A. Logan College Board of Trustees has been awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Trustees Excellence Award by the national organization, which has 1,300 chapters nationwide.  This award recognizes distinguished community college Boards of Trustees for their leadership and outstanding commitment to student success.  John A. Logan College is one of only four selected to receive this honor.  Members of John A. Logan College’s chapter nominated the Board of Trustees for this award in December 2018.  According to the chapter’s sponsor, Associate Dean for Student Activities Adrienne Barkley Giffin, chapter members felt that the Board had earned the recognition due to their strong support of the chapter.  Each member of the Board was presented with a medal, and the College received an award statue to display.

Board Vice-Chair Mandy Little thanked the chapter for all of their hard work. “We are truly honored to receive this award, but it is because of the outstanding work this chapter has done that we are able to receive this honor,” said Little. “It is rewarding for us to interact with you and to see your development, so thank you for this honor.”

In their nomination, the chapter members stated that “Board members hear reports about our chapter and encourage our leadership development. They listen intently every month when the student trustee, who is an active PTK member, reports on our chapter’s projects.” The nomination went on to say, “When PTK members give presentations at Board meetings, trustees typically inquire about what we have learned from our experiences and what actions we plan to take. They encourage members to pursue higher levels of leadership responsibility in PTK. In fact, in five of the last six years, a member of the John A. Logan College chapter has been elected to a regional office, and in the last three years, two students ran for international office.”

In other Board news, Vice President for Business Services and College Facilities Brad McCormick reported that there are currently 20 construction or renovation projects underway at the College. McCormick reported that the College’s solar power project is nearing completion and that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled during the spring semester. McCormick added that power production should begin in mid-December.

Several Protection, Health, and Safety projects were approved as well as the adoption of the 2019 Tax Levy. The Board also approved a contract to replace the digital display sign at the Greenbriar  and Route 13 intersection.

The Board of Trustees does not have a regularly scheduled meeting in December. The next  meeting is set for January 28 at 7PM.
