JALC Set to Unveil New Mascot, Seeks Community Input in Selecting a Name

Published on July 30, 2024

John A. Logan College is excited to announce the selection of a new mascot that pays homage to its distinguished namesake, General John A. Logan. The new mascot is a horse thoughtfully designed to embody the spirit of the horses ridden by General Logan during his time as a Union Army General in the Civil War.

General Logan, a distinguished figure who later served as a United States Senator, is celebrated for his military leadership, significant educational contributions, and pivotal role in founding Memorial Day. The choice of a horse as the college mascot symbolizes General Logan’s valor and his enduring legacy in education and public service, honoring the historical significance of our college’s namesake.

The horse mascot, a vibrant representation of General Logan’s strength, courage, and dedication, is set to become a central figure in college events, athletics, recruiting activities, and community events. It will embody the pride and tradition of John A. Logan College, inspiring our college community.

“We are excited to introduce our new mascot as a tribute to General Logan’s remarkable achievements and commitment to education,” said Dr. Kirk Overstreet, President of John A. Logan College. “The horse symbolizes the courage and dedication that we strive to instill in our students, and we believe it will inspire our college community for years to come.”

The unveiling of the new mascot will be celebrated with a series of events and activities throughout the upcoming semester, including special appearances at athletic events, community gatherings, and more. The college invites students, alumni, and the local community to join the festivities and welcome the horse mascot into the John A. Logan College family.

The mascot has yet to be named because the College will seek public input through the fall 2024 semester. Voting will begin on August 12. Students will be emailed a link to vote; others can visit the college website. Individuals will have four choices, and the name will be unveiled at the kickoff to the Spring 2025 semester.

“Historians have mentioned a couple of different horses used by General Logan throughout his life, so rather than choosing between one of the horses, we decided it would be fun to get our students and the community involved in selecting a name,” said Overstreet.

The College plans to unveil the mascot imagery during welcome-back activities beginning on August 9, and merchandise will be available later in the semester. Fall semester classes begin on August 12. Walk-in registration begins on August 1. Students can apply anytime at jalc.edu.
