The Level Two Facilities Maintenance certificate outlines intermediate maintenance tasks that require a higher level of skill and technical knowledge compared to Level One maintenance. These tasks typically involve more complex repairs, diagnostics, and troubleshooting but do not require specialized certifications or extensive expertise in a particular trade. Level Two maintenance ensures the continued functionality and efficiency of a facility essential systems while addressing non-routine issues that go beyond basic upkeep.

The Facilities Level 2 Technician Program is a minimum of 15 credit hours. Please use our Tuition and Fees page to calculate your approximate cost.

Additional Costs for This Program

Mechanics gloves and safety glasses required for all courses

PPE requirement

  1. Safety glasses (2pair 1 shaded 1 clear)
  2. Mechanics gloves
  3. Face shield (optional)
  4. Welding helmet when brazing or welding (if applicable)
  5. Closed toe shoes (no sandals or open toe shoes)
  6. Try to avoid metal rings and necklaces when working with electrical and machinery

If you have special medical needs for any of the above PPE, please send your doctor’s note to Human Resources.

Tool bags are preference of students but required to house all tools. Recommended tool bag is a backpack or other portable tool pouch.

An optional drill/driver is also highly recommended for HVAC field work and courses. Drills can be impact driver/drill and should include a standard bit set. (1/4”,5/16”,3/8” bit)

Note: Since this is a hand-on training program, tools are preferred ASAP when class starts. This will enhance learning and increase employment opportunities.

Most of following tools can all be purchased locally from 3 HVAC wholesalers or independent hardware/lumber stores. Locally there is Carterville Winair, Crescent supply, and Johnstone supply. Special refrigeration and metal tools will need to be purchased from a local HVAC wholesaler. Also, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, and Menards will have what you need in regards to hand tools. . Competitive prices are also offered online.

  1. Mechanics tool sets. Standard tools including Allen wrenches, sockets (3/8” drive), screwdriver set 12 in 1 HVAC, crescent wrenches (6inch, 8 inch, 10 Inch), channel locks, wire strippers, wire cutters, wire crimpers, pipe wrench (6 inch, 8 inch), ¼” magnetic nut driver long, ¼” stubby magnetic nut driver, 5/16” magnetic nut driver long, 5/16”stubby magnetic nut driver, thermostat screwdriver, open end wrench set, needle nose pliers, and vise-grips

1. Perform Intermediate Building Repairs and Structural Maintenance

Conduct moderate drywall repairs, door and window adjustments, and basic carpentry tasks to maintain the structural integrity of a facility.

2. Diagnose and Repair Common Plumbing Issues

Troubleshoot and repair plumbing systems, including replacing fixtures, fixing leaks, and maintaining water heaters to ensure proper facility operations.

3. Conduct Electrical Maintenance and Minor Installations

Safely troubleshoot and repair electrical panels, outlets, and lighting systems, as well as perform minor wiring adjustments and fixture installations.

4. Service and Maintain HVAC Systems

Perform advanced HVAC maintenance, such as inspecting components, cleaning condensers and coils, and replacing belts and motors to optimize system efficiency.

5. Implement Preventive Maintenance and Safety Protocols

Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules while ensuring adherence to OSHA safety standards and facility compliance regulations.

These Level Two PLOs equip learners with the skills needed to handle more complex facility maintenance tasks and prepare them for mid-level roles in building operations and maintenance.
