Ombud

The Ombud helps students and employees with guidance, information, and insight about student conflicts, complaints, or concerns. The Ombud follows the International Ombuds Association’s (IOA) standards of practice, which are derived from IOA’s ethical principles of confidentiality, impartiality, informality, and independence.

What the Ombud Can Do

  • Be a confidential resource
  • Listen to concerns
  • Explore options
  • Help think through problems and clarify or prioritize issues
  • Assist with preparing for difficult conversations
  • Facilitate communication between parties
  • Gather information and make referrals to other offices or resources
  • Clarify policies and procedures
  • Confer with groups on the development and revision of policies and procedures
  • Consult with college officials about broad issues and trends and make recommendations when appropriate

What the Ombud Can’t Do

  • Serve as an office of notice
  • Participate in any formal processes
  • Conduct investigations
  • Advocate for an individual or party
  • Tell people what they should do
  • Keep official records
  • Address issues involving persons outside the college
