Benefit Information

Illinois State Benefits

Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG) is for those who have served at least one year of federal active duty service in the Armed Forces of the United States, which may include the Illinois National Guard and the Reserve component of the Armed Forces or regardless of length of service, have served in a foreign country in a time of hostilities in that country; was medically discharged for service related reasons; or was discharged prior to August 11, 1967. The State of Illinois provides an education scholarship for the dependents of veterans who are either Missing In Action, a Prisoner of War, died while on active duty, 100% disabled due to service connected disabilities or died as a result of a service connected disabilities. 105 ILCS 5/30-14.2 (MIA/POW Scholarship) establishes the benefit and 95 Ill. Admin Code 116 (MIA/POW Scholarship) provides the rules governing the administration and eligibility of dependents. More information about the MIA/POW Scholarship.

Federal Benefits

The MGIB-AD program—sometimes known as Chapter 30—provides education benefits to Veterans and Service members who have at least two years of active duty. More information about the MGIB-AD program.

The Vocational Rehabilitation education benefit is offered to service members who have a service connected disability rating of at least 10% from Veterans Affairs (VA).  The service member meets with a Veteran Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) to establish eligibility and apply for this benefit. Once eligibility is established and approved, the VRC contacts John A. Logan’s Veterans Resource Office and we help you with obtaining books, supplies, and classes. More information about VR&E.

If a service member has at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after Sept. 10, 2001, and are still on active duty, or if you are an honorably discharged Veteran or were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days, you may be eligible for this VA-administered program. If you have eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and any other GI Bill® program you must make an irrevocable election of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® before you can receive any benefits. This chapter offers education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition or of Veterans who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition.

Eligible dependents of Veterans may include spouse, children, step children, and adopted children. Marriage certificates, birth certificates, and adoption decrees are needed to apply along with the service members DD-214, Member 4.

MGIB-SR program provides education and training benefits to eligible members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components and VA makes the payments.

Eligibility includes: Have a six-year obligation to serve in the Army National Guard Reserves, complete your initial active duty for training (IADT), meet the requirement to receive a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT, and remain in good standing while serving in the Army National Guard or Reserves. Chapter 1606 is NOT available if you are not actively drilling unless you were discharged service due to a disability that was not caused by misconduct. Your eligibility period may be extended if you are ordered to active duty.

The Tuition Assistance (TA) Program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty civilian education programs in support of a Soldier’s professional and personal self-development goals. TA is a Public Law that is implemented by Department of Defense (DoD) Directive and DoD Instruction, and all Soldiers (officers, warrant officers, enlisted) on active duty, Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers on active duty (pursuant to U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32), and TPU Soldiers are authorized to participate in the TA program.
